Chamber kilns: Sundon cement plant
This series is from a box of old, badly-foxed Ektachrome slides that I just found, taken in Autumn 1976. It was possible to tease some interesting detail out of them with liberal use of Photoshop. The chamber kilns, on the left, operated from 1898 to 1928, but were not demolished until the 1980s, and remained in use as an improvised storage area. The adobe-like texture of their structure is due to the many decades of clinker dust deposition. The battered truck to the right was used to haul out under-burned clinker on the odd occasions that it was made. For more details, see Link
