Old Railway Embankment
The old Crief to Balquhidder line passing fields just outside Crieff. Silver Birch trees have populated the track bed. The width of the embankment suggests that the line was single track. On the right a farm track connects two fields through a strip of woodland.
Crieff to Balquhidder Railway Line
The line was constructed by the Crieff and Comrie Railway and opened in 1893. Subsequently the line was extended to Balquhidder by the Lochearnhead, St Fillans and Comrie Railway which opened in 1901. The Crieff and Comrie Railway was absorbed into the Caledonian Railway in 1898 and the Lochearnhead, St Fillans and Comrie Railway followed suit in 1902. It all passed to the LMS in 1923. The line as a whole was never profitable. After nationalisation of the railways in 1948, the line between Comrie and Balquhidder was closed to passengers in 1951 and, after sporadic use for the transport of construction materials to local hydro electric sites, the track was finally lifted in 1959. The Crieff to Comrie section closed in 1964. Fuller details available on Wikipedia.
