Waterloo Bridge, Betws-y-Coed
This well-known bridge is located about half a mile south-east of the village of Betws-y-Coed. It was built by the civil engineer Thomas Telford, to carry his London to Holyhead road (now the A5) over the River Conwy

The arch bears the cast iron inscription "This arch was constructed in the same year the battle of Waterloo was fought", but although designed and constructed in 1815 its erection was not completed until 1816 (LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) BBC Wales and LinkExternal link – Wikipedia). The spandrels above the arch are decorated with rose, thistle, shamrock and leek, representing the Act of Union. They were modelled in relief by William Hazledine.

Apart from the stone bastions, the bridge is made wholly from cast iron and was only the seventh such bridge to be built. The single span of 32m consists of five cast-iron arched girders at 1.5m centres supporting cast-iron deck plates
