Lime Kiln, Burgess Park
Lime Kiln, Burgess Park
A clue to Burgess Park's industrial heritage is given by this lime kiln. Burgess Park was created in the 1940s, gradually taking over an area which had previously been occupied by streets, houses, industry and a canal. This lime kiln is a reminder of the industries which flanked the canal.

Burgess Park is also to benefit from a major redesign during 2011 and into 2012. This will involve some major landscaping work. The mound behind the lime kiln is due to be levelled, meaning that the kiln will be less hidden and more visible from the opposite side.
Burgess Park :: TQ3377
Burgess Park, in inner South East London, is unusual as it is a large park created on a "brownfield" site.

The area was previously occupied by streets, houses and light industry as well as a branch of the Surrey Canal. Plans to create a park here started in the 1940s. At the time, there was very little green open space in this part of inner city London.

The park gradually grew, but in rather haphazard fashion with decaying, abandoned roads still cutting into the park. In 2011-2012 the park closed for about a year so that major work could be done to regenerate the park.
