Going Green For London
Going Green For London
After a successful trial December 2003 to January 2007 using three Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses on the RV1 route, Transport for London decided to press ahead with the introduction of hydrogen powered buses as part of its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. The first of the new vehicles entered service in December 2010, with eight intended to be in service by the end of 2011 - making the RV1 London's first zero emissions bus route. Ironically, despite providing the trial vehicles, Mercedes-Benz didn't get the final order. The new vehicles are Wright bodied with a VDL chassis.

The fuel cells are mounted on the roof along with ancillary equipment required to cool the cells. The cells create electrical energy by combining hydrogen with oxygen taken from the atmosphere, creating water vapour as a by-product. The electricity is then used to power a motor which is located where the diesel engine would usually be at the back of the bus.
