The 'Black Lion', Hammersmith
The 'Black Lion', Hammersmith
The Black Lion stands near the eastern end of Hammersmith Terrace, in the narrow strip of old Hammersmith which has survived between the Thames and the A4 dual carriageway. The shot was taken from the stub-end of Black Lion Lane, a few yards from the river - the view in the opposite direction is shown in Clare Gibson's TQ2278 : Hammersmith Terrace from Black Lion Lane.

The local authority has taken measures to prevent the end of Black Lion Lane from turning into a car park - rightly so, I would say, as this is still an attractive little corner of London. The contrast between the old (York stone?) paving and the new is a perfect demonstration of how much the character of a place owes to what is - actually - under your feet.
