The Victorian Swimming Baths, Ashton-Under-Lyne
This building at, Henry Square, was one of the first and largest municipal swimming baths in the country. It was opened by Ashton Corporation in 1870. The tower, which is 120 feet high, housed the flues from the steam boilers and heaters.
The building was closed when the newer baths were opened in Water Street in the 1970s. Like the rest of this end of Stamford Street, this once-splendid building has been allowed to deteriorate and suffered badly from vandalism and is now in a very sorry state..
The building is listed Grade II (Link
) and has therefore survived the large scale demolition of most of Stamford Street West/Henry Square. It is to be hoped that the building will be re-furbished and used for a new purpose as part of the re-generation of this part of Ashton (the St Petersfield development).
For more information and pictures of the interior of the baths when in use, see Link
