Geddington Eleanor Cross - detail
Geddington Eleanor Cross - detail
All of the other pictures submitted show the whole of the cross, so perhaps it's time for a close-up. "Of the three surviving Eleanor Crosses," wrote Nikolaus Pevsner in 1961, "this is the most modest and the best preserved. Its shape heralds the end of the classic Gothic moment and the coming of Dec capriciousness. Triangular and carrying on at the top, by means of six pinnacles, to a recessed hexagonal star with more pinnacles. Close diapering [see also SP8983 : Geddington: The Star Inn from the Eleanor Cross] in the lower parts. The three figures in the three niches characteristic also of the end of the crisp and sharp carving of up to 1275-80 and the heavier flow and broader masses of 1290 etc."
