St Michael South Elmham church and green
St Michael South Elmham church and green
St Michael's is the most easterly of the seven South Elmham churches, three miles due south of Bungay. It is a small pantiled structure overlooking St Michael's Green to the south and west. The Green is first mentioned in 1321, when it was called Hushaghgrene = green with the hus (house) and hagi (grazing enclosure). Grazing rights on the 20 acres of this common pasture belonged to the houses surrounding it.
