Gawton's Well
Gawton's Well, taken 6 years ago
Hidden away in the woodlands of Greenway Bank Country Park and on an unmarked path is Gawton's Well. It is reputed to be a healing or holy well, the story goes that a man riddled with disease was driven from his village and made his way here. After bathing in the water he was cured and remained living close by as a hermit under SJ9055 : Gawton's Rock. The very clear water of the spring emerges from a pipe at the base of the wall at the rear, it then runs through two stone troughs before becoming a stream. Even after the driest Spring on record there was still plenty of water emerging. Whether or not you believe the tales this is still a lovely place to visit and just sit quietly for a while.
