View from the terrace at Cliveden House to the Parterre
Cliveden is the third house on the site. The first two burned down and the current house was built by Sir Charles Barry for the Duke of Sutherland. The site where the formal parterre is to the south of the house is one of the largest in Europe at four acres. It was levelled during the reign of Charles II for the Duke of Buckingham. The house is now a hotel but the house and gardens are owned by the National Trust. There are wonderful views down to the Thames and across the Berkshire countryside.
