Cross-marked stone
The stone is located near NS2988 : Ballevoulin Farm; see that photograph for context. For another view, which shows the stone in relation to the mound behind it, see NS2988 : Old burial ground with cross-marked stone. Those pictures, like the present one, were taken from a road that leads through Glen Fruin.
The cross-marked stone is located at the southern end of a mound that may be the remnants of an ancient burial ground. See the Canmore link in the end-note for full details.
In that report, Armand Lacaille's comments from 1924 state that the markings were, even then, rather weathered and would probably not last much longer; fortunately, the markings are still, for now, easily visible from the road. There is a drawing accompanying the Canmore report; although my photograph, taken from about 50 metres away, does not show a great deal of detail, what can be seen does at least correspond with the drawing (click on the drawing in the Canmore report for a complete, larger view).
Two kilometres to the south-east along the same road, another NS3086 : Ancient cross slab can be seen from the road; it stands beside the NS3086 : Old schoolhouse, near the NS3086 : The Black Bridge (see NS3086 : The Black Bridge).
