St Gregory's Church and War Memorial, Bedale
The Great War Memorial, in the form of a Saxon Cross, was unveiled in 1920 with names from the Second World War added in 1947. It is a Grade II listed structure (Link
- British Listed Buildings)
Church of St Gregory
The building is mostly 13th and 19th Century, with a small remnant of the original 9th Century Saxon Church which survived William the Conqueror’s harrying of the North. The early 14th Century West Tower is one of the best examples of a fortified church tower in the country. It was built to withstand Scottish raiding parties and the slot for the portcullis may still be seen.
The church is a Grade I Listed building (Link- British Listed Buildings.com)
