Potato field, King's Standard Hill
Taken from the motorway overbridge, with Ferrybridge power station on the horizon. The site, at the highest point of the Womersley Road, has panoramic views. An observation post was built here during the Second World War for the local volunteer Observer Corps. The name of the site has been the subject of fanciful speculation for many years but the original name was the King’s Stand. This was an elevated hide within Cridling Park towards which deer and game were driven, to be ‘picked off’ by the waiting dignitaries concealed there.
