County Arcade, Leeds
Seen from the Briggate end, this is one of the five surviving Victorian arcades in the city, of the original eight which were built between 1878 and 1900. Along with the nearby Cross Arcade, it was built by the theatre architect Frank Matcham. Both feature lavish ornamental embellishment: marble columns on the ground floor, coloured mosaic frescoes in the three galleried domes, a cast-iron gallery lined by a faience frieze of fruit, and ornamental cast-iron arches supporting the glass roof.
