Military Medal and Two Bars
1939-1945

Fred 'Buck' Kite was born in Newcastle-Under-Lyme in 1921, at the age of 17 he enlisted in the Royal Armoured Corps and was posted to the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment. During the Second World War he was awarded the Military Medal three times for courage under fire in North Africa and France, the third medal was awarded for great personal courage before being seriously wounded at Le Grand Bonfait, Normandy in 1944. Each citation (viewable here- LinkExternal link ) was signed by Montgomery, firstly as General Officer Commanding the 8th Army, then as Commander in Chief of the 21st Army Group, and finally as Field Marshall. His medals were presented to him at Buckingham Palace by King George VI. Fred Kite survived the war with the unique distinction of being the only British soldier to have won the Military Medal three times, he died in 1993 at the age of 72. In 2004, youngsters at his former Primary School helped to design this permanent memorial to the former pupil who became a war hero.
