Castles of Leinster: Athcarne, Meath
The original three storeyed tower house of 1590 is recognisable as the block at the far end of this ruined mansion of the 1830s. The tower was built by William Bathe, a judge of the Court of Common Pleas; his arms on a carved plaque and those of his second wife Janet Dowdall were later transferred to the mansion.
