Woodstock is just a short distance away from the more prominent White's Castle in Athy, and is in open space in the midst of a housing estate. It has suffered from repeated vandalism in the past, hence the railings around it which also encloses the information board on the castle, so that a pair of binoculars are needed to read it! The castle comprises two wings, the one projecting southeast seen here has gunloops on its upper levels and may have been added in 1536 by Lord Deputy Grey. Despite the blocked C16 upper windows, there is evidence to suggest the walls may originally have been part of a hall-house of c.1250.
