NS4479 : Site of former limestone quarrying
4 km from Blairquhomrie, West Dunbartonshire, Great Britain

Site of former limestone quarrying
The green area that takes up much of the foreground has a slightly disturbed appearance, compared to the surrounding moorland. However, its former use is best appreciated by examining it in context, and with the aid of satellite imagery; this area is then seen to be one of the end-points of a network of tracks that arose in connection with the local limestone industry. For the track leading to this particular site, see NS4479 : Ancient trackway.
This is one of three similar areas that are referred to in the final paragraph of the description accompanying NS4379 : Ancient trackway; see that item for more on the network of tracks as a whole.
As for the background of the present photograph, the edge of the Fintry Hills can be seen at the extreme right, while the tallest of the hills that can be seen a little left of centre is Ben Ledi (NN5609).

Network of old limestone industry tracks :: NS4379
A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See Linkfor a Geograph article about the network, and Link
for an annotated satellite view of it.
