Castles of Munster: Ballynakill, Tipperary
Ballynakill looks most impressive on the approach to its location to the southwest of Roscrea. Close up it reminds me of a ruined C18 Scottish barrack block, probably due to the extensive remodelling it underwent during this period. At the heart is a much altered tower house of c.1600 with unvaulted rooms that in 1640 belonged to Richard Butler. The massive bawn of 130m by 80m is enclosed by a wall up to 7m in height in places.
