The Nan Lyle memorial cairn on Whitchesters Hill
This stone cairn topped with a granite toposcope at the summit of Whitchesters Hill was officially unveiled on the 26th of June 2011 in memory of the late Nan Lyle from Hawick. Around 140 people were on the inaugural walk for the ceremony. The inscriptions around the vertical edge of the toposcope and on sandstone blocks set into the cairn reflects the interest she had in scouting and her work with the Borders Exploration Group in Africa. The inscription around the toposcope edge reads:-
Baden-Powell Do your best. Try and leave this world a little better than you found it.
The inscriptions on the blocks are:-
Dedicated 26/6/2011; Rob Lyle local supporter; Borders Exploration Group; Trust in God; Scout Leader 1950-2010; TGO Challenge 9 times; Hawick 50+ Group; Scouts Silver Wolf.
The cairn is surrounded by a metal fence to protect it from livestock damage and the views from the 259m summit are very rewarding.
