Pennard Lane Crossing
One of the lonely crossings on the old Somerset and Dorset branch line to Burham on Sea. Before Beeching was instrumental in closing this line in 1966, the crossing here was operated by a keeper, whose cottage has vanished without trace. Having no mains water, the cottage was supplied with this in cans by passing trains, off loaded from the locomotives, and Ivo Peters (the well known local film maker) captured such delivery to the lady keeper in the 1960s. Today it is hard to believe trains once passed here. Glastonbury Tor is just visible in the distance.
