An Irishman by birth, George White joined the Foot Regiment of the 27th Enniskillens at a young age, and made progress through the ranks before joining the 92 Regiment of Foot. He was awarded the VC for 'conspicuous bravery' at Charasiah (Afghanistan) in 1879.
