Kew: The Royal Botanic Gardens: The Rhizotron and Xstrata Treetop Walkway
A rhizotron is a laboratory constructed underground with viewing windows in order to study the soil and its interactions with plants and animals, and there is one at the foot of the walkway. The walkway which is sponsored by Xstrata was built to the designs of the Marks Barfield Architects practice and was opened in 2008. The walkway’s structure, which is about 18 metres off the ground and about 200 metres long, is based on a Fibonacci numerical sequence, which is often present in nature’s growth patterns.
