Complex rock carvings at Morwick Crag
It is likely that all the carvings on Morwick Crag
NU2304 : Morwick Crag from the north side of the River Coquet which is almost unique for its spiral motifs
NU2304 : Spiral carvings at Morwick Crag were made from a path running along the cliff side high above the river. The panel shown here is still just above the existing path. Erosion of the river bank on the outside of the bend has forced the path almost down to river level where it often floods, leaving many of the motifs now high above your head. Rock falls, erosion and people are the main threats to the rock art here. A previous visitor has outlined the motifs in a red chalk as they are quite faint and difficult to see in poor light although this is not good practice for such a sensitive national monument
