Wolfe Tone was an Irish patriot who joined the French 'Armada' expedition to Bantry in 1796 which was prevented by foul weather from landing. When the 1798 rebellion took place he landed in Donegal and although holding a commission in the French Army was arrested and sentenced to death. He committed suicide before the sentence could be carried out.
