Corpus Clock
Corpus Clock
This was designed by the Corpus Christi College Library and was unveiled in 2008. It celebrates the 'grasshopper escapement' mechanism invented by early English clockmaker John Harrison, transforming it into a giant, jaw-snapping, tail-wagging 'Chronophage' (time eater).
Below the creature time is told by a seris of illuminated slits cut into the giant face of the clock. On the hour the clock reminds us of our mortality with the sound of a chain dropping into a wooden coffin.
