Put up in 1935 it fell into disuse in 1958 for public health reasons there were local cases of poliomyelitis - but remains as a local icon. The clump of trees just visible on the hilltop on the left horizon contains a 'Starfish' Control Bunker, a relic from the second world war that might have saved the town from more serious damage by German bombers than actually occurred LinkExternal link

Update: In 2013 the structure was listed Grade II as one of only four inter-war concrete diving platforms LinkExternal link
