Greenhalgh Castle
The castle was built in 1490 by Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby. It was a plain building, probably three storeys in height with a square tower at each corner, thought to be about 60 feet in height. The ruins which remain are part of the Western Tower. After a long siege during the Civil War, Oliver Cromwell ordered the castle to be dismantled and the wood and lead sold. Soon afterwards, much of the stone was taken and used in nearby farm buildings.
There is currently no public access allowed to the ruins so they have to be viewed from Castle Lane. An information board SD4945 : Greenhalgh Castle Information Board is situated approx 300yards away at the "viewing point" from where this photograph was taken.
