Geilston Yair
Geilston Yair
This is the second of six yairs on the shore. A yair is a kind of fish-trap; for further details, see NS3576 : Ardoch Yair. For the previous and next yairs in sequence, see the end-note.

Geilston Yair was also known as the Murraghs, after the adjacent farm on the shore: NS3377 : Murrays Farm (ruin), also shown in Link and Link

Part of the yair is shown in the present photograph; it extends out from shore, as shown here, and then turns to the left, although the latter section was submerged on this occasion. A couple of weeks later, I took a picture at low water, which shows all of these features: NS3376 : Geilston Yair. The various yairs along the shore (including their submerged portions) can often be discerned on satellite imagery.

The built-up area on the far side of the River Clyde is Port Glasgow.

Located at the Murraghs, this is the second of six old yairs (fish-traps) whose remains can be seen on the shore between Ardoch and Craigendoran. The first is Ardoch Yair – Link – and the third is Ballimenach Yair – Link
