College buildings viewed from New Road (A483). The college was Grade II listed in February 1981. Llandovery College was founded and endowed by Thomas Phillips in 1847. The original aims of the college were to provide a classical and liberal education (for boys only). Emphasis was given to the Welsh language and the study of Welsh literature and history. The present-day college is an independent school providing education for boys and girls aged 418.
