St Peter's Parish Church, Wootton Wawen
St Peter’s Church at Wootton Wawen, near Stratford-upon-Avon, has the most pronounced Saxon work in the county and is the oldest church in Warwickshire.

The first wooden church was built at Wootton between 720 and 740 AD as is proved by the charter of Æthelbald which mentions the minster which then existed in the area and founded by Æthelric.

As was common practice at that time the original structure was of timber with the characteristic thatched roof but this was later replaced by a less precarious structure in stone. Part of this stone structure still survives. (LinkExternal link - Know Britain). The first church may have been burnt and pillaged by Viking invaders, but between about 970 and 1040, Wagen, an Anglo-Danish landowner, established the present church (LinkExternal link - Wootton Wawen Parish Council).

The base of the tower and the first two stages are Saxon, dating back to the 900s, if not earlier. (LinkExternal link - The Saxon Sanctuary). The top of the tower is 15th century as are the clerestory, the nave battlements, the north doorway and porch, the middle arch of the arcade, the west window and the east window.

The Church of St Peter is a Grade I listed building (LinkExternal link - British Listed Buildings).
