Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Stonham Aspal
Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Stonham Aspal
Stonham Aspal hosts an unusual church, although not unique to Suffolk, in that it has a wooden tower. It is said that the tower was once made of stone and flint but Squire Ecclestone of Crowfield found the 5 bells within its belfry to limit the range of bell ringing. In the 18th Century, the thick walls of its tower were removed and replaced with a wooden tower to accommodate the 10 bells that now hang from the belfry. These ten bells give their name to the village pub opposite the church and also provided inspiration for village sign found halfway down the Street.
