Old Buckenham Mill - Great Spur Wheel
Old Buckenham Mill - Great Spur Wheel
The large cast iron wheel is used to transfer power from the main shaft to the underdriven stones (in windmills the stones are usually overdriven). It is so large it had to be cast in several sections (12). All from 1818.
Old Buckenham Mill
Old Buckenham Mill is a preserved towermill built in 1818. Originally it had 8 common sails but now has four patent sails. Slightly famous in the mill world for having the largest circumference in Britain, it houses five stones. The granary next door had four pairs driven by a steam (later oil) engine. Inside is a large spur wheel bolted together in 12 parts. The mill is open several times a year.
