Viewed from the new footbridge over the railway at Falmer station on the opening day of the season. Brighton & Hove Albion's first visitors were Doncaster Rovers who had been the very last league opponents at the Goldstone Ground in 1997. Both teams had suffered then risen during the intervening years, Brighton enduring a couple of seasons of commuting to Gillingham, 75 miles away, to play home games before returning to the ramshackle athletics track at Withdean whilst a bitter planning war was played out with neighbouring Lewes District Council. Rovers lost their league place in 1998 when their chairman deliberately ran the club in the ground even trying to burn Belle Vue down in the process. Both clubs have risen from those dark times and kicked off the 2011-12 season in the championship.
