Helmsley Castle, East Tower
The East Tower was a later addition to the castle, built by Robert de Roos II (1190-1227), a Templar Knight who was one of twenty-five barons appointed to ensure King John observed the Magna Carta.

Designed to impress, rooms in the tower would probably have been used to receive important guests. The three windows would originally have lit the upper floor, with the smaller window above at roof level. The tower was remodelled in the 14th century, when it was raised in height and a further floor was added.
