Peacock butterfly (Inachis io), Heddon Butterfly Garden
On a warm sunny afternoon there were a large number of Peacock and Red Admiral butterflies feeding on the surrounding buddleia bushes and occasionally resting on surrounding stone work. All look very pristine, presumably this years crop, and feeding busily before they go into hibernation.

Eye-spots are common in many species of butterfly. The flash of eyes as the wings are opened are probably a defence against predators or to direct any attack away from the head and body LinkExternal link
A rival theory is that the marks work simply because they are conspicuous. Predators are wary of prey with striking patterns, as those patterns often warn of toxic substances LinkExternal link
The four large eye-spots of the peacock seem to have evolved to a considerable extent and it is possible that they are also used in attracting mates as the similar features are used in the peacock bird. However, unlike the bird, both sexes of the butterfly are similarly attired.
