Portskerra: names of those who perished in sight of their homes
Such is the poignant ending to the inscription on the bottom tablet of NC8865 : Portskerra: the Drowning Memorial.
The names of those who died in three tragedies at sea are inscribed above - the central one on 25 June 1890 in which seven of the eleven are MacDonalds; on the left, a disaster on 22 August 1918; and the other on 5 December 1848. The names Mackay, McLeod, Sinclair and Fraser feature prominently in the latter two.
