Site of Rod's Vein, Cow Green Reservoir
The concrete cap and spoil heaps just south of NY8130 : Slapestones Sike are the remains of a mine worked for barytes until the 1950s. The cap covers a 30m shaft down to Rod's Vein previously worked for lead. The other base was for winding gear. The main entrance to the mine was a level now submerged under the reservoir NY8130 : Boat house, Cow Green Reservoir. Above the track NY8130 : The Rods is another (fenced off) shaft into the lead vein NY8130 : Old mine shaft by Cow Green dam track
Barytes (barium sulphate) is an ore of the metal, barium, often found in veins of lead and zinc ores. It is used in the chemical, paint and paper industries, as a shield against radioactivity and in drilling 'muds' used on oil rigs. In paper-making, barytes is added to improve the paper's finish - levelling it and giving it a gloss. It was not mined commercially in the North Pennines orefield till the later C19th.
