SE5950 : Tyburn York's 'Tyburn' until c. 1800AD was here on Knavesmire
And here it was that Dick Turpin (horse thief) was hanged in 1739. His body was then snatched from the surgeon (by the mob!) and buried in St George's churchyard.
Ironic that Knavesmire should later become the home of York's classic racecourse!
