The Cook's cottage
The Cook's cottage
One of two recently renovated 19th-century squatters' cottages on Blakemoorgate; Natural England's 'Once upon a hill' project has restored this (and an adjacent ruin) to a condition similar to their original state. They are open to the public for a couple of days each month, along with a series of outbuildings and stores which try to tell the tale of the harsh life that would have been lived up here by the families of farm workers or miners.
This particular one was still occupied up to the mid 1950s by Fanny and Robert Cook, although most of the neighbouring buildings had fallen into disrepair by then.
Squatters Rights were held to be established if the cottage walls and a roof could be erected overnight, and smoke was seen to be coming from the chimney by morning. The squatter could then farm an area of land bounded by the 'throw of an axe' from each corner of the building.
