Benjamin Rush plaque, George Square
Benjamin Rush plaque, George Square
A graduate of the University who became one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence which gave birth to the United States of America. It has often been noted that 19 of the 56 delegates who signed the document were Scots-born immigrants, whose presbyterian heritage would have influenced their view of monarchy in favour of democracy. As a Presbyterian himself, Rush would have doubtless shared their values. LinkExternal link

"They [the Scots] became the vanguard of our civilization. These were the men who first declared for American independence. For generations their whole ecclesiastical and scholastic systems had been fundamentally democratic." -- Theodore Roosevelt, US president
