Temple Wood stone circle
Temple Wood stone circle
The site has been modified several times over the last 5000 years.
The original monument is the ovoid (rather than circle) of 22 upright stones about 1.6m high as seen here.
A thousand years later two cairns were added outside the circle.
Then one was excavated inside the circle.
About 300 years later the gaps between the uprights were filled with slabs and an outer bank of stones was added against the circle.
300 to 400 years later another cairn was excavated in the very centre of the stone circle and the two inner cairns were covered with stones.
As with other ancient sites in the area peat formed and protected the site for the next 2000 years until, during the middle ages, some of the stones were robbed.
19th century farmers used the site as a dumping ground for field stones, making it look something similar to the large cairns in the valley.
