FORMBY’S world-famous asparagus is ready for harvest – and the demand is such that an additional two acres of farmland are to be devoted to growing it.
The National Trust's Sandfield Farm has been carefully prepared for growing asparagus for the first time, with 14,000 crowns planted over recent weeks. Meanwhile, the recent warm weather has raised the first spears of the new season at nearby Larkhill Farm, where they went on sale last weekend.

Andrew Brockbank, the Trust's Property Manager at Formby, said: “Growing asparagus on National Trust land has always been a long term aim at Formby. The asparagus industry had a long and distinguished history in the area and we are looking forward to continuing the tradition. It's also a fantastic way of connecting with our food heritage and encouraging people to eat local, seasonal produce.”

The thousands of asparagus crowns planted at Sandfield Farm will need careful tending for three years before they can be fully cropped.
