Morris Dancers at the White Horse Show, Uffington 2011
Morris dancing is English rather than British. It does not appear to have been taken up by denizens of the Celtic fringes although it comes close to Wales in some places. As a tradition Morris dancing isn't that old, dating back to around the late 15th century. Its fortunes have ebbed and flowed over the years but the present strength of the Morris dance tradition is ascribed to Cecil Sharp who witnessed a dance gathering in Headington in 1899.
