Rectorial Battle 1966
Rectorial Battle 1966
Part of the traditional process of electing the Rector of the University of Edinburgh was, and possibly still is, the Rectorial Battle. I am fairly sure that it never achieved anything in particular as far as the election was concerned, but it offered a much relished excuse for large numbers of (mostly male) students to spend an enjoyable hour or so throwing various relatively harmless objects and substances at other (mostly male) students, watched by even larger numbers of spectators (male and female) from vantage points carefully out of reach on the terraces round the Old Quadrangle. I was prompted to dig this out and submit it after a visit to the Old Quad last week, when we saw a squad busy laying paving stones at the east end of the central area, and noted a lawn at the west end, both of which amenities are probably incompatible with the sort of good if not exactly clean fun being enjoyed in this now historic shot.

For a further taste of the event see LinkExternal link (noting in passing the rather coy description of the paper missiles whose true nature is perfectly apparent).
