Flood walls on either side of the river are part of the Caldew and Carlisle flood alleviation scheme LinkExternal link completed in 2010. The back of Madford Retail Park, Charlotte Street is on the left. To the right is vacant land on Viaduct Estate Road previously occupied by council offices.
The bridge is on a dismantled railway line, opened in 1877 to take goods traffic from Bog Junction to Willowholme Junction, bypassing Citadel Station (detailed information on Cumbria Railways website LinkExternal link ). This part of the line is now the end section of the Caldew Cycleway from Carlisle to Dalston.
