SD7355 : A preserved bench mark on St James' church, Dalehead

3 km from Tosside, North Yorkshire, Great Britain

A preserved bench mark on St James' church, Dalehead
A preserved bench mark on St James' church, Dalehead
This clear bench mark is not recorded on the O.S. database as it relates to the time when this actual building was about 1200 metres away to the north-north west. In 1932 the Stocks Reservoir was created, which threatened the church, so the old church was demolished stone by stone and then rebuilt at this new location. The mark is recorded on the 1894 O.S. map at GR73215653 on the south east corner of the porch, and levelled at 615.8 feet. Comparing early photos to the modern day show that changes have been made, but the porch does seem to be exactly the same - see LinkExternal link and LinkExternal link For more details see the Bench Mark Database: LinkExternal link
