Pashley Manor Ha-ha forms southern boundary of the garden
It's very good to have a 'borrowed view' in a garden. It lends space and links the formality of the cultivated curtilage to the countryside beyond. As always though a problem occurs in preventing ingress by livestock. It's nice to see them grazing in the distance but quite another thing to have them snacking on the roses. A fence is an obvious solution but it intrudes into the visual amenity and the seamless transition between garden and countryside. That's why a Ha-ha is such an elegant solution. The dry ditch backed by a subterranean wall keeps the cattle out but doesn't impinge on the view.
