Bullfinches are migrants in Shetland, with birds belonging to the brighter and larger northern subspecies rather than the indigenous British race. A record influx occurred in 2004, which also included birds giving a strange 'trumpet' call, believed to indicate an origin from northern Russia rather than Scandinavia.
